Up to 15 million taxpayers in France are set to receive automatic income tax refunds from the French tax authority between July 25 and August 1. Here is who this concerns.

People’s final tax statement relating to 2024 income will arrive in the next seven days, either by post or via their personal space on the French tax website.

The statement will show whether a refund is due or additional tax is payable - no further action is taken with regard to the declaration if neither of these is applicable.

Around the same time, reimbursement payments from the Direction générale des finances publiques (DGFiP) will appear in the bank accounts of taxpayers under the label REMB IMPÔT REVENUS.

These refund payments happen for two reasons: overpayment of income tax deducted at source in 2024 and/or tax credits and reductions, based on expenses declared in the 2025 income tax return.

No action is required to receive the refund, provided your bank details are up to date in your personal account on impots.gouv.fr. The funds are transferred directly to your account.

Tax credits and reductions

These apply to a wide range of declared expenses, including:

  • Home help or childcare costs

  • Union dues

  • Charitable donations

  • Energy renovation works

  • Certain rental and property investment schemes

In many cases, a partial advance on these expenses would have been paid in January 2025 based on previous declarations.

The remaining balance is settled following analysis of this year’s tax return.

Refunds for overpayments

If the total amount taken at source from your income in 2024 (or as direct debit income tax instalments) exceeds what is actually due, the DGFiP will refund the difference automatically.

To check your situation, you can consult your avis de situation déclarative 2025, available in your personal space online, if you received one of these after making your declaration in the spring. If not, the definitive information will be provided on your avis d’impôt which should be receiving shortly.

These documents show the final amount of tax due, along with any reimbursements or outstanding sums.

How much could you receive?

Refund amounts vary depending on the nature of your expenses and the sums already withheld. In some cases, they may reach several hundred euros.

By contrast, some households will be required to pay a balance of tax if their expected income in 2024 was underestimated, or if the January tax credit advance was too generous.

These payments will be deducted from September, either as a one-off or in instalments.

The annual refund campaign is part of the ongoing process of real-time income tax assessment, introduced with the prélèvement à la source system in 2019.

While refunds are common, the final calculation depends on changes in income and in expenses giving rise to tax credits and reductions.

Taxpayers are advised to verify their situation online and to update bank details promptly to avoid delays.
