Drivers travelling across France for New Year’s celebrations should not face hold-ups with minimal traffic expected over the next two days.
However, traffic is expected to pick up at the weekend as many return from winter breaks with children returning to school on Monday January 5.
Traffic watchdog Bison Futé has not placed any traffic conditions in place for drivers between December 31 - January 2 (Wednesday to Friday).
While this does not rule out the possibility of delays – particularly resulting from an accident or lower speed limits in poor weather conditions – it means severe jams are unlikely.
However, there are warnings in place for Saturday (January 3), which is expected to be marked by congestion in the Île-de-France region, Burgundy, and eastern France, says the watchdog.
This traffic is mainly expected in the north-east, heading towards the capital, as people return from skiing holidays and other European countries.
Advice for drivers on Saturday January 3 includes:
Enter or cross the Île-de-France region before 11:00 or after midnight
Avoid the A31 motorway between Luxembourg and Nancy from 15:00 to 19:00
Avoid the A5 motorway between Langres and Troyes from 13:00 to 18:00
Avoid the A6 motorway between Lyon and Beaune from 11:00 to 21:00
Avoid the A39 motorway between Viriat and Dijon from 11:00 to 17:00
