Service open for online tax corrections

Those who made an online French tax declaration in the spring will have received an email this weekend notifying of the opening of a service to correct your declarations if you made a mistake or left something out.

Everyone who declared online will now have received their avis d’imposition income tax statement in their personal space on the tax website, with details of your taxable income and your tax bill, if any, for income last year. Those who declared by post should be receiving it soon if they have not already had it.

The email sent out by the tax services clarifies that if you wish to now make a change to your declaration you can now do so by going into your personal space on the impots.gouv.fr website and clicking the box marked Corriger ma déclaration en ligne 2019.

This service will be open until December 17 this year. It is not available via smartphones and tablets.

However note that you cannot correct mistakes related to a change in family situation (marriage, death etc) and if you did not declare such a change you need to complete a new declaration on a paper form and send it in to the tax office with a covering letter saying it should replace the declaration you made online.

For those who declared by paper, if you want to make any changes at this stage you need to fill in a new declaration, writing on the first page Déclaration rectificative, annule et remplace. You can find the forms, including the main form 2042, via the search box at the impots website.

The email that was sent out to online declarers also reminds of some of the other services available via your online space, including:

  • Options to make adjustments to your arrangements for tax-at-source by clicking Prélèvement à la source, including letting the tax office know of recent changes in your personal situation
  • Managing how you pay your taxes, under Paiements
  • Consulting your avis and other paperwork at Documents
  • Contacting your tax office with a question or information via your Messagerie Sécurisée

The email also links to other official sites for information on tax-at-source, or about what your tax is used for.

The tax service is also highlighting the legal ‘right to make a mistake’, which means people may avoid financial penalties for errors in their tax forms, where the mistake was in good faith and it was the first time it happened.

There is more information on this and some examples of common mistakes at oups.gouv.fr
