Policy holders with a leading French top-up health insurance provider are set to be reimbursed €44 each after the insurer recorded nearly €100 million in profits.

‘Harmonie mutelle’ will pay the sum to all policy holders who have comprehensive coverage and have been with the group for at least two years in June.

This comprises around 1.2 million people in France.

In addition, a further €44 million in payouts to corporate customers under group contracts (i.e, workers covered by Harmonie mutuelle policies) will be paid out at a later date.

This €44 sum - known as an ‘eco-santé dividend’ - is being paid back to policyholders for the first time since such a dividend system began in 2020. It follows a bumper 2024 when the firm made an estimated €99 million in profit.

The “dividend is based on our company’s unique structure: we have no shareholder to remunerate, and are entirely focused on the interests of our members,” said CEO of the insurer Catherine Touvrey in a press release announcing the payout.

The payout has an added “educational virtue of showing the link between the mutuelle and its members,” she added.

“By activating our redistribution mechanism in the form of a dividend for the first time, we are reaffirming our commitment to fair, transparent social protection and accessible, sustainable healthcare,” she added.

The system also helps prevent the insurer from overcharging customers.

It is “not in the insurer’s interest to generate too much profit, because the surplus would go back to the members… so we have to adjust the amount of contributions as best we can,” the CEO said.

It comes as health insurance costs generally are rising in France, particularly for retirees.

In the last three years, individual policies have increased by 25%.
