Will France tax wife's Irish pay?

Reader's query on if his wife has to pay tax in France despite having a full-time job in Ireland.

My wife and I have been living in Rennes since June. I work in a full-time job but my wife works for a company in Dublin and gets paid and taxed there (although there’s no tax payable in Ireland at her current income due to the Irish tax-free allowances). What do we do in France about her pay in Ireland? M.D

Normally income from salaries earned abroad is not liable to tax in France as it is taxed and liable to the social security charges of the foreign country. However, it does bring up the issue of whether your wife is in fact a French resident, since if she is working in Ireland full- time then she may well be deemed a resident of Ireland. This is something you should consult a professional about, since there are other issues that would need to be taken into account.
