A return to calm weather is forecast across France this week, after major storms battered both the north and south last week.

Temperatures will rise at the start of the week, reaching around 2C above national averages for the season, before the national average drops slightly below average by the end of the week.

Morning conditions will begin to get chilly.

Monday October 26

Monday will see one of the only disturbances of the week, as a rain front passes across the north of the country.

Rain will cover Brittany, the English Channel, and reach up to the Belgian border, potentially moving inland to central France, but should only be light drizzle and will end by the evening.

In the south, calm conditions are forecast, mostly sunny although wispy clouds are expected.

Highs of 13C - 14C in the north, and up to 17C in Brittany despite the rain are forecast, with temperatures reaching between 19C - 22C in the south and along the Mediterranean.

Tuesday October 27

Dark clouds will remain along the English Channel, potentially bringing rain to the northern and north-west coasts. Pockets of rain may slip inland to Paris or along the Loire Valley, but will only bring drizzle.

While the rain is not expected to be intense, powerful winds are forecast, potentially reaching up to 90 km/h along the coast.

Most regions south of the Loire will see sunshine, although cloud coverage is expected to be strong in the south-west even without the risk of rain.

Temperatures will be at their highest point of the week, with highs of 16C - 18C in the north, and 20C in the south, with peaks of up to 24C.

In some places, temperatures will be between 6C and 9C above seasonal norms at the peak of the day, although this will only be during a small period of the afternoon.

National average temperatures encompass all readings throughout the day, and chilly mornings – slightly below average for the season – help to bring this down to only 2C above usual for the season, despite the warm afternoons.

Wednesday October 28

A high-pressure system from the Azores will move to cover the north of France, bringing calm weather across the country, although some cloudy skies may remain along the English Channel, without the risk of rain.

However, the system will not bring warmer temperatures, and these will begin to drop slowly from Tuesday’s weekly high.

Highs of 14C - 15C in the north, and potentially only around 12C in the east, are forecast. In the south, highs of 17C in the south-west, rising to 20C along the Mediterranean are expected, however areas further inland around the Massif Central could see temperatures only reach 13C.

Thursday October 29

The high-pressure system will move east, positioning itself over Germany, but continuing to cover France.

This will see calm conditions remain, and on Thursday skies should be at their clearest with only some wispy clouds present.

Higher-altitude areas will benefit from plenty of sun, although lower lands may see morning fog alongside chilly temperatures. Drivers should remind themselves of the rules for foggy conditions before heading out.

Temperatures will drop by around 1C compared to midweek.

Friday October 30

The high-pressure system remains in place, with plentiful sunshine forecast across the country.

There is only a small risk of light rain along the French Riviera with all other areas remaining calm. Cloudy skies are expected in Brittany but without the risk of rain.

Temperatures are expected to continue to drop slightly, with highs of 13C in the north, or 11C around Strasbourg, and up to 18C - 19C in the south.

Early forecasts for the weekend see calm conditions remain with temperatures continuing to slowly drop.
