A British woman has died after being struck by a car while out jogging with her husband in eastern France.

The couple were running in Beaune (Côte-d’Or) when the woman, 35, was hit by the vehicle on Tuesday morning (July 8).

They were crossing the street on Avenue Charles-de-Gaulle, south of the town centre when the incident happened, according to an initial investigation.

Emergency services were called, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was not injured but was taken away by firefighters.

A 45-year-old man who was driving the vehicle was taken into custody by the police and questioned. According to media reports, he lives in the town.

British media are reporting that the couple were on holiday in the area, but this has not been confirmed.

Jogging has become increasingly popular in France, but runners should remain cautious, particularly when running alongside major roads.
