Breton flat used as bottle dump

A TENANT caused a cleaning nightmare after leaving their Brittany flat knee-deep in empty beer bottles and cans.

The owners of the property, in Ploeuc-sur-Lié (Côté-d'Armor), made the discovery when they visited the flat, after not hearing from their tenant in more than a year.

The pile of bottles and cans was said to have reached ‘almost a metre high in some corners of the living room and bedroom’.

The owners gained access to the three-room flat, along with a bailiff and surveyor, two weeks after obtaining a legal right of entry, as they sought to conclude the sale of the property.

Landlady Sophie Le Guilloux-Rousseau said her husband and a locksmith tried to enter the property, but ‘the door would not open more than 30cm because of the filth’.

The tenant, who had since moved out, was said to be “sheepish” and had made a start on cleaning up the mess.

Mme Le Guilloux-Rousseau said: “He admits he was wrong, but has no explanation. I'm angry, disgusted.”
