Brit war veterans’ cab trip to France

A fleet of 80 London taxis is to bring 161 British WWII veterans on a four-day return visit to the Normandy beaches.

EIGHTY London taxis are to transport 161 British Second World War veterans to Caen for several days of commemorative events.

The London Taxi Benevolent Association for War Disabled is offering the services of volunteer drivers for the special occasion, which will see most of the veterans return to Basse-Normandie for the first time since the war. The drivers will accompany them throughout their four-day stay.

During the events, from May 7 – 10, they will be meeting young people in Caen as well as visiting a British war cemetery, going to the museum at Arromanches (the site of Gold Beach during the D-Day landings), receiving commemorative badges and listening to jazz.

Their activities are being organized by the Normandie Mémoire association, which promotes the history of the 1944 allied landings to liberate France. They have an English section in their site at Click here
