Free electricity meters for homes

President says state could foot bill to place intelligent meters in people's homes to improve electricity consumption

INTELLIGENT electricity meters that monitor and display your electricity consumption could be handed out to homes in France.

President Sarkozy has said the government is studying the possibility of subsidising the rollout of the “Linky”, at an estimated cost of between €120 and €240 per unit.

If the project is agreed, the state will aim to place the Linky in 95 per cent of French households -- 35 million homes -- by 2018.

The Linky is currently on trial at homes in the Indre-et-Loire and Lyon.
