Water pollution is widespread

Report by the environmental watchdog says virtually all rivers and lakes are contaminated

MOST rivers and lakes in France are contaminated with herbicides, according to a report released by the Commissariat général audéveloppement durable (CGDD) – with some water in Paris “unfit” for human consumption.

The worst-hit areas are those where cereals are grown or those given over to viticulture: the north of France, Paris basin, the south west and near tributaries of the Rhône.

"Only 7% of areas are exempt and they are largely situated in regions with little agriculture or little intensive agriculture,” said the report – noting the south east and the Auvergne as the limited examples.

The survey compiles data taken in 2011. Of the 176 hydrological areas surveyed, 63 had a level of contamination judged ‘improper for human consumption” – that of 0.5 microgrammes per litre.

Levels 10 times higher, “not to be turned into drinking water”, were found in the Paris basin, south west and north of France.

Natural aquifiers were in a better condition, with only a quarter registering levels above 0.5 microgrammes per litre.
