91% of France's communes do not have a comprehensive entry on the free online encyclopedia
AN APPEAL has been launched to get more of France's towns and villages on to Wikipedia - or to improve their existing entry.
91% of France's 36,000 communes do not have a comprehensive article about them on the free user-edited encyclopaedia, with photos and links to further reading material, according to the not-for-profit organisation Wikimedia France.
The campaign is timed to coincide with the summer holidays, when many city-dwellers spend time in their native village or second home.
Wikimedia says it needs good-quality photos of villages, their architecture, gastronomy and traditions.
Residents are also being encouraged to tidy up existing articles about their village, with links to references.
