Letters: Carbon monoxide poisoning is a big risk for properties in France

Connexion reader shares their concerns regarding lack of ventilation

Carbon monoxide alarms are essential

To the Editor,

We are thankful for The Connexion’s recent article warning about the risks of carbon monoxide in France and elsewhere.

Can I raise two extra concerns for locals and visiting tourists, especially in the hotter months here?

The temptation to, say, use your barbecue on a nice warm evening on your terrace is appealing. However, be very cautious and before you retire ensure the embers are fully extinguished.

Sadly I know of two French deaths from this – they obviously thought they were safe as the barbecue was outside the property.

Secondly, rental properties in France and all over western Europe are still at high risk from such poisoning.

Apart from general poor ventilation in the property and poorly controlled cooking and water heating devices, the main cause is often the lack of some or any ventilation in the bathroom/shower areas.

It might be a good idea to bring your own carbon monoxide detector with you.
