Violent storms are to hit France today (August 26) and continue affecting much of the country until Friday.

Caused in part by the movements of Hurricane Erin, storms will cross into France over the Pyrénées and reach up to the German border.

There is also a risk of stormy weather in parts of Normandy and the south-west.

Storms will increase in intensity tomorrow before becoming focused on the south-east of France on Thursday.

Rain and strong winds are expected today, reaching up to 80 km/h in parts of eastern France.

Hail is also likely on Wednesday and Thursday across the storms’ path.

In its 06:00 bulletin, state forecaster Météo France raised weather warnings in more than 40 departments.

Most of these were for stormy conditions, although warnings for strong waves/coastal flooding were also given in some Atlantic departments.

Currently, all alerts both for today and tomorrow are only at a less severe tier-two yellow level, the first warning level for disturbances.

Generally, it asks people to be aware of conditions, keep up with local weather reports and act with more caution.

However, it is likely that as the storm progresses the forecaster may upgrade these warnings to more severe levels, particularly if the storms persist in the same areas for several days and bring extended rainfall, hail, or strong winds.

It is therefore recommended to check the official Météo France website during the course of the storms

In light of the warnings, it can be a good idea to prepare your home to minimise any damage, including from gales, lightning, and rain.
