Big temperature drop of up to 12C on way for Saturday in France
Autumn weather - with rain - is finally set to arrive for most of country
The continually extending summer temperatures in France are finally set to come to an end this weekend.
Heavy rainfall alongside storms in the east of the country will bring a temperature drop of up to 12C, sweeping away the calm warm weather France has been experiencing since mid-September.
In some areas the drop could reach 15C.
The warm anticyclone winds pushing into France from the Atlantic will come to an end on Friday, helping to bring down temperatures alongside Saturday’s rainfall.
From Sunday, temperatures will stay below 20C across almost all of France except along the Mediterranean coast and will likely not rise above this level until next spring.
Sunglasses on Friday, coats on Saturday
Before Saturday’s drop, however, temperatures will remain high across most of France, reaching up to 29C in Limoges and 30C in Tarbes and Toulouse today (Thursday October 12).
Rainfall will begin tomorrow morning but this initial burst will only affect northern France, and south of the Loire and in the east temperatures will be similar to the rest of the month so far.
Then on Saturday there will be a widespread and significant temperature drop, bolstered by the lack of tropical winds from the Atlantic ocean coinciding with extended rainfall across the centre and west of France.
Temperatures are set to fall by around 10C in many areas between Friday and Saturday afternoon, although in Clermont Ferrand the drop could reach 15C.
This is due both to the end of the anticyclone winds, as well as the rain and storms set to pummel most of the country.
Météo France usually only provides weather warnings one day in advance, meaning information on the severity of Saturday’s weather is not yet available.
However, three tier-two yellow warnings are in place for strong winds in Brittany on Friday.
With the exception of Toulouse and areas on the Mediterranean coastline, everywhere will see temperatures fall below 20C – in Lille, the mercury is set to fall from 24C to 12C, and could remain below 10C throughout the weekend.
Autumn finally on its way
The rainfall and stormy weather is only set to occur on Saturday, and by Sunday should disperse.
However, although temperatures will rise slightly in the south and centre, they will not rise to the levels seen so far in October, and will start to trickle down to finally reach autumn averages.
In the north, temperatures will stick to around 10C – 15C from next week but could rise to 18C on certain days
The south will still see warmer than average weather, although temperatures are unlikely to climb above 20C, except on the Mediterranean coastline in Nice and Marseille.
