Brexit resolution – including support for Britons in the EU – passed in European Parliament by large majority
A RESOLUTION setting out the European Parliament’s wishes for the coming Brexit negotiations – including paragraphs aimed at protecting British citizens in the EU - has been passed by a large majority.
The final vote was 516 in favour, 133 against and 50 abstentions, with most opposition coming from right-wing nationalists and eurosceptics, including Marine and Jean-Marie Le Pen and Nigel Farage.
It followed a heated debate with comments ranging from the parliament’s lead Brexit negotiator Guy Verhofstadt looking forward to a younger generation “who will see Brexit for what it really is – a catfight in the Conservative Party that got out of hand… and who will lead Britain into the European family again” – to Mr Farage, who caused offence by calling his fellow MEPs “mafia” and “gangsters” for expecting the UK to pay billions of euros before it leaves.
British Liberal Democrat MEP Catherine Bearder also spoke during the debate, saying: "The lies of the referendum campaign are crumbling before our eyes... You told us we were scaremongering, we were not.
"Sixteen million Brits did not say they want to leave the European family and those who did will not be fooled again by the false promises of the nationalists.
"This May British people will send a message to Mrs May at the local elections: 'You lied to us, we are angry and we want our country back, it belongs inside the European Union'. She said she would continue to fight against Brexit and to give Britons a say on the final deal.
A spokesman for Mr Verhofstadt, who was the main architect of today’s resolution, said they are very pleased with the result of the vote. “The resolution was outspoken, with no vague text, and it still obtained a two-thirds majority,” he said.
Although it stops short of offering ‘associate EU citizenship’ the resolution includes passages calling for expat rights to be given full priority in the negotiations and for the EU to seek to mitigate the loss of EU citizenship rights by Britons. It acknowledges that “many UK citizens have expressed strong opposition to losing the rights they currently enjoy”.
The resolution also says that the parliament intends to build on the elements set out in it as the negotiations develop, for example by adopting further resolutions on specific matters.
The crucial role of MEPs during the negotiations was underlined during the debate by EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Commission Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier, who also took part.
See here for more on the content of the resolution and here, for our latest interview with MEP Charles Goerens about associate citizenship.
