Environmental fight over new motorway
A new motorway to relieve congestion around Arles is the subject of fierce debate.
The plan, for the so-called A54, is supported by the mairie but contested by environmental campaigners, who say the boost to the economy would be at the expense of the Camargue natural park.
Alternatives suggested include a new freight train route. A public inquiry is expected in 2021.
