Facebook warning over 'RER-surfing'

14-year-old boy killed by a train while attempting latest social media challenge

GENDARMES have taken to social media to try to warn young people against an online challenge known as "RER-surfing".

Several people have posted videos online of themselves clinging to the outside of a moving train in the Paris suburbs and northern France.

Paris public transport operator RATP has described their behaviour as "dangerous, irresponsible and reprehensible".

A 14-year-old boy was killed in Champagne-sur-Oise last Monday when he was struck by another passing train while attempting the stunt.

Gendarmes in the Nord department are spreading prevention messages on Facebook groups and trying to reach "young people who are easily influenced".

"We remind you - once again - to be prudent when challenged to do something on social media," they said.

Other recent social media challenges have included going missing for 24-72 hours and nominating friends to jump into cold rivers.
