French gilets jaunes burger made with ‘tear gas sauce’
A restaurant in Nîmes (Gard, Occitanie) has created a new hamburger inspired by the gilets jaunes movement, named “Gilles et John”, and served with “tear gas” and “CRS sauce”.
The dish is sold by Bar Joe, and costs €9.50.
It features a bright yellow bun in reference to the “yellow vests” worn by protesters, and a “roundabout” circular beef patty in reference to the roadside roundabout protests.
It also includes onions “from the vegetable plot of the Elysée”, a “tear gas” pepper sauce, and a “CRS sauce”, with cream, ricotta, and Saint-Moret cheese.
The name “Gilles et John” is a play on words, as it sounds similar to “gilets jaunes” when said quickly in French.
Bar Joe owner Louis said: “This is a way to diffuse the drama of the events. And what’s more, our customers like it.”
The tear gas and CRS sauce is a reference to the clashes seen across the country - especially in Paris - during some of the gilets jaunes “Actes” protests over the past two and a half months.
Tear gas has been used as one of the weapons by police and CRS against protesters, among others such as water cannon and flash-balls.
