Happy ending for cat found with 1kg of dreadlocks

The 9-year-old cat, named Chamade, was unable to clean itself and its hair started to clump together on its back.

Its owner did not realise there was a problem when she gave it to the refuge Le Radeau des Animaux in Férel, Brittany. She could not take care of her animals anymore and gave three of her cats – two of them had dreadlocks but Chamade, nicknamed the ‘rasta cat’ was in the worst state.

Owner of the refuge, Dominique Bacot said: “We had never seen anything like this before. It sometimes happens to animals with long hair or on dogs, but this was exceptional. It took us at least three hours to cut everything.”

She added: “It was not looked after enough and the cat being obese could not really move and groom itself.”

The cat stayed at the refuge for a month but has now found a new home with one of the other abandoned cat, Chad, who had started to grow small dreadlocks too. The third cat is still at the refuge.
