How I feel this morning

I feel like a squatter.
Of course, as an expat living in France, I wanted Britain to remain in the European Union. I’m not daft enough to think that the arrangement is perfect, but the reciprocal healthcare, the fact that our income from the UK is not taxed twice, and – fundamentally – our right to live here were enough to have me ticking the ‘Remain’ box.
But it wasn’t just that. I truly believed that, while the EU needs reform, we were stronger together.
And I was so convinced that what I called ‘the sensible choice’ would win out that I went to bed happily at 23.00 last night and slept well.
When my husband woke me up to the news this morning, I was absolutely stunned. I always believed that Britain was a country with foresight and vision – the ability to look beyond itself and face the world with confidence and an outward-looking perspective.
