Hundreds of Auchun supermarkets to be rebranded in France

Hypermarkets are not set to be impacted by the change

Major retailer Auchan is planning to rebrand and franchise its remaining supermarkets in mainland France to ‘Intermarché’ or ‘Netto’ (two brands run by Groupement Mousquetaires) as it continues to struggle in the sector.

Auchan will continue to manage the day-to-day running of the stores, but prices at the affected supermarkets could drop by between 6% to 8%, sources close to the chain say.

The changes could happen by the end of 2026, pending legal review over fair competition and monopoly rules, Auchan said in a press release.

“The businesses and real estate remain Auchan’s property, the employees remain Auchan employees, and we will operate under the Intermarché banner, which will supply us with goods, commercial policy, store concept, and will also supply the stores,” said CEO of Auchan retail Guillaume Darrasse (quoted in Capital).

Hypermarkets unaffected

Auchan-brand hypermarkets are not included in the deal said the retailer.

For Intermarché, it marks a further expansion after acquiring hundreds of ‘Casino’ branded stores in 2023/2024 and more than 80 ‘Colruyt’ stores in north and north-east France earlier this year.

The supermarket remains France’s third-largest behind E.Leclerc and Carrefour.

Auchan and Groupement Mousquetaires began a partnership in 2024. The chains already run a joint-purchasing group together and share investment in several projects.
