Island home looking for its next Robinson Crusoe

The island of Roch Ar Hon takes ten minutes to get to by boat from the Brittany coast near Paimpol and so is perfect for anyone who loves privacy.

The typical 18th century Breton house, built in 1758, has five rooms and is furnished and ready to move in. A refurbishment in 1996 smartened it up, with exposed stone on the outside, slate roofs and a living room that looks like the bow of ship.

The house is 140m2 and the whole island makes for 6,420m2 in total, with the special feature of a small tower and dome at its summit.

These were originally built so that the island’s occupiers could watch out for any enemies sailing up the estuary. They can be reached by a guard’s walkway and stairs which crisscross the island.

The agent for the property, Peter Bos, said: “It’s always hard to say who might be interested in a property, but I think they need to love being surrounded by the sea and living in a maritime environment.

“I think they would also need to be interested in sailing as you have to use a boat to reach the island. The previous owners used it as a holiday home.”

The island is completely private and is served by electricity, gas and water networks. It is next to the Bréhat peninsula.
