Jellyfish stings shut beach

AN invasion of jellyfish with stings up to 50 metres long forced authorities to close the beaches at Grand Crohot, Cap Ferret; Lacanau, and Le Porge in the Gironde after 200 people were stung in one day.

The attacks from the purple and blue-coloured Physalia come after beaches in the Pays Basques and Les Landes were also affected. In all, nearly 600 people have been stung in various attacks this summer.
