See: big rise in flu cases and hospitalisations in France

The flu epidemic is now present in all regions of France, with 200,000 new cases declared last week alone, according to Santé Publique France. We look at the state of this year’s flu season.

The 2024 winter flu season began earlier than in recent years and has been at epidemic level in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region since December.

Doctors at the time expressed their concern at the low numbers of people getting their flu vaccinations, despite a high profile campaign and free injections for at-risk people.

91% of people not vaccinated

Public health authority Santé Publique France noted that 91% of people consulting for flu symptoms were not vaccinated against the flu viruses in circulation.

People who are immunocompromised, over 65, pregnant, overweight or are in contact with vulnerable people are urged to get a free vaccination, if they do not already have one.

The free vaccination campaign has been extended until February 29.

Even if you are in an ‘at-risk’ category, you can still get a vaccination, although you may have to buy the vaccine (€6 to €12 depending on the brand). You can ask a doctor, pharmacist, nurse or midwife to administer it.

The price of a vaccination for people not targeted by the winter flu campaign is:

• In a pharmacy: €7.50
• By a nurse: €7.56
• By a doctor: €8.50 (the €25 consultation is reimbursed 70% for vaccinations)
• By a midwife: €8.50
