Slow computers cost 5 days a year

French users turn to tablets instead of waiting for PC – or contemplate throwing the machine against wall

SLOW computers are costing users five days a year of wasted time in France – with the result that people are turning to speedier tablets like the iPad for rush tasks.

Computer memory manufacturer SanDisk said that continual waiting for files to load, programs to open up and for the PC to start were creating stress for users and added up to a loss of productivity for employers.

It said French users spent, on average, 120 hours a year waiting for their computer – with an average 11 minutes while it started each morning.

More than one in four users also said they had lost sleep because of their slow computers and one in three said it left them in a bad mood for the rest of the day.

The study even found 16% of French people interviewed who said that their frustration had boiled over and they had been set to throw the PC or laptop against the wall or stamp on it.

Faster, always-on tablets are winning over users – with 2.18million sold in France in the first six months of this year - and PC manufacturers have reacted by creating quicker “ultrabooks” that power up instantly and give the ease of use of a tablet with the extended use of a PC and keyboard.
