Toddler rescued after 13 hours in Alps crevice fall

The girl, who is from Switzerland and was walking with her family, fell into the small-but-deep crevice on Wednesday and was unable to get out herself. It is not known how she fell, but the crevice was just eight metres from the main walking path, according to French news source 20 Minutes.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Over 100 people took part in the rescue operation, which worked against the clock to save the girl. She was finally rescued at 2am. Subdued but still showing signs of life, she was then taken to a hospital in Bern by helicopter, and spent a night under observation.

“She came out almost unharmed, with just a few scratches,” said Christian Zuber, spokesman for the Police of Valais, speaking to the Agence France-Presse.

“We had to move the rocks centimetre-by-centimetre in a very short amount of time. I have never seen such a rescue mission before,” explained Matthias Lorenz, head of the local fire brigade, as reported by 20 Minutes.
