Toulouse top of hospital league

Patients in Toulouse receive the best hospital treatment in France, according to a league table published today

THE UNIVERSITY hospital of Toulouse has overtaken Lille as the best in France, according to an independent study.

The 17th annual list of France’s top 50 hospitals, published by Le Point, has seen the Midi-Pyrénées establishment, which was rated France’s second best, overtake the one in the north of the country.

The unofficial but influential league table examines the quality of establishments’ medical and surgical specialties.

The study is partly based on anonymous patients' medical records data which can be applied for use in research.

It marks hospitals on how specific illnesses are treated, with the scores combined to give an overall picture of how well a hospital is performing.

The two hospitals in Toulouse and Lille have been at the head of the list for a number of years.

Bordeaux University Hospital has been ranked third in the country, ahead of the University Hospitals of Strasbourg and CHU de Tours.

The Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital is the leading Parisian hospital on the list, but has dropped down to 10th, while Le Mans hospital entered the top 50 for the first time.

The top 10 hospitals in France, according to the survey, are:

1 CHU Toulouse
2 CHU Lille
3 Bordeaux University Hospital
4 University Hospitals of Strasbourg
5 CHU Tours
6 CHU Montpellier
7 Nantes University Hospital
8 CHU Rouen
9 CHU Rennes
10 Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, Paris

Every four years hospitals have to be certified by health watchdog the Haute Autorité de Santé, which looks at elements such as food and treatment of patients.
