Reader Question: Do I need a special, separate caravan insurance or is it already covered under my car policy?
This depends on the type of caravan you are using.
Caravans towed by a car are classified as a vehicle and therefore require at minimum third-party liability insurance (responsabilité civile).
If the caravan weighs 750kg or less (separate from the weight of the vehicle it is attached to) it can be covered by your vehicle insurance, provided your policy allows for caravans.
If not covered in your current policy, you may be able to add this as an optional extra – speak with your insurer.
If using a rented caravan below this weight threshold, insurance may be provided by the hire company, but this is not mandatory so you should check the contract carefully.
Caravans above the 750kg weight threshold require a separate insurance contract, often known as an assurance caravane or assurance remorque policy. It must at minimum provide third-party liability, but can also cover additional elements including theft, fire, storm/natural disaster damage, and legal assistance.
Most major insurers offer such policies, and prices vary considerably based on what is covered and the type of caravan.
Caravans fixed to one location
Caravans that are fixed to a plot of land are not considered a moving vehicle, and therefore do not require this insurance.
Depending on their location, however (private park, campsite, public area, etc), the owner of the land may demand insurance.
This will be at minimum third party liability, covering damage to other people and property from your caravan (for example from a fire), although additional cover can be added.
If the caravan is on your own land it may be covered by your general home insurance policy. If not, ask if this can be added.
Otherwise, you will need to take out dedicated insurance for the caravan, which is available through most major insurance companies.
