French elections: Can I still register to vote in the second round?

Reader Question: If I didn’t sign up to vote for the first round of the presidential election, can I still do it for the second round?

It is possible to vote in the upcoming second round of the presidential election on April 24 if you did not vote in the first, but you must have already registered to vote in advance.

This year, the deadline for registering to vote online was March 2, or March 4 if you went to your mairie in person.

After this date, it was not possible to sign up and so you will not have the right to vote in either of the election rounds.

There are some specific circumstances under which a person may not have been eligible to vote in the first round but is now eligible for the second.

These include:

• People who turn 18 between the first round on April 10 and the second on April 24

• People who obtain French nationality between April 10 and April 24

• People who have been granted the right to vote in the second round by a judicial court

People who were unable to go to the polls last Sunday but who are registered to vote and who wish to cast their ballot on April 24 may also do so.
