The cost of a mutuelle in France varies based on factors like your age, location, and the level of coverage you choose.

A mutuelle is a private top-up health insurance that covers the portion of healthcare costs not paid by the French national health system (Sécurité sociale).

The average cost of a mutuelle across all profiles was €1,524 in 2024, according to insurance comparison website Les Furets.com.

Typical mutuelle costs

On average, a mutuelle policy for a 60-year-old costs around €110 per month, according to insurance broker Réassurez-moi.

For a family of three, comprising two parents and one child, the average monthly premium is approximately €134.

However, the cost of a mutuelle increases with age and may vary depending on where you live in France.

Other factors affecting mutuelle cost

If you are a young and healthy person, the cost will generally be on the lower end, but for families or people with chronic health conditions, the price may increase depending on the additional coverage required.

The type of coverage you select also influences the price.

Higher-end policies offer more comprehensive benefits, such as private hospital rooms or coverage for alternative treatments like osteopathy.

Levels of mutuelle cover

  • Basic coverage: These plans usually cover the essentials like hospital care and a portion of medical consultations.

  • Intermediate coverage: This provides broader cover, which might include dental and optical treatment and certain specialists.

  • High-end coverage: Comprehensive plans, including everything from advanced dental care to alternative treatments or extensive hospital stays.

The percentages reimbursed (100%, 150% etc.) vary for different aspects of healthcare.

These percentages refer to the maximum percentage of the fixed state rate for a health service (called the tarif de convention) to which you may be reimbursed.

You should bear in mind that many services are not covered by the state to 100% of this figure and some doctors charge over and above it (dépassements d’honoraires).

You cannot be reimbursed more than you paid in healthcare costs.

Affordable mutuelle options

If you are employed, you may be able to access a more affordable mutuelle through your company.

French law mandates that employers with at least 50 employees must offer a mutuelle to staff, with the employer covering at least 50% of the cost.

Alternatively, a mutuelle communale, which is a group health insurance plan negotiated by your local commune, can be a cost-effective option.

These policies are often cheaper, with an average monthly cost for a 60-year-old of €59.45, according to comparison site Le Comparateur Assurance.
