French nationals have only a few more days in which to register to vote in April’s presidential elections.

The deadline is set for March 2, although you will have until March 4 if you go to your mairie in person.

You can register to vote online via government information page Service-public.fr, which will ask you to fill in a form and attach an image of your ID and proof of address to show that you have a link to the commune where you will be voting.

It is also possible to sign up via the electoral lists of your commune by going to the mairie, the interior ministry has said.

“You will have to provide proof of identity, proof of address and a registration form which can be picked up at the mairie,” it added

If you are living with a family member or friend you can register in that commune.

The first round of the election will take place on April 10, with the second round on April 24. The latest poll from research company OpinionWay – which surveyed 1,600 people between February 20 and 23 – gives President Emmanuel Macron 25% of the vote, Marine Le Pen 16% and Valérie Pécresse and Éric Zemmour 14%.

Who can vote in this election?

You can vote in this year’s presidential and legislative elections if you are over 18, have French nationality and be entitled to all of your civil and political rights.

This is different from the rules for municipal and European elections, in which EU citizens living in France are also allowed to vote.

French citizens are automatically added to the electoral register of their commune when they turn 18. If you want to check that you are on the list, you can do so through this government page.

If you have French nationality but are living abroad and would like to vote, you can find out more about what to do on this interior ministry website.
