Most Covid vaccinations in France not in worst areas

The regions most affected by Covid-19 in France have vaccinated comparatively fewer people, newly released government data shows.

The data, published for the first time on January 11 and updated daily, shows how many people in France have been vaccinated by region.

It shows that Provence-Alpes-Côte-D’azur has vaccinated 225 people per 100,000 residents and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté has vaccinated 351 people per 100,000 residents.

These regions are among the worst affected by Covid-19 currently, with incidence rates (the number of positive Covid-19 cases per 100,000 people) of 310 and 245 respectively.

Normandy, in comparison, where the incidence rate is 166.6, has vaccinated 474 people per 100,000 residents.

And in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, where the incidence rate is 93.6, 373 per 100,000 residents have been vaccinated.

The government has not yet provided an explanation for this.

The below table shows how the vaccination rates of two regions badly affected by Covid-19 - Provence-Alpes-Côte-D’azur and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté - compare with two regions less affected by Covid-19.

On Sunday, January 10, Health Minister Olivier Véran announced that this week the first 50,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine would be delivered to the most affected regions in the country.

“We have not yet reached full speed for vaccinations in our country, but we are vaccinating more people every day," Mr Véran said.

“Next week the pace will increase again. We are already within the daily average of European countries.”
