‘I am beyond disgusted’: Readers react to French ‘riot tax’

Many question why policyholders should foot the bill for damage caused by rioters

During Paris’s October 17 protest

Connexion readers have shared their views on France's 0.8% levy on home and vehicle insurance policies to help cover the cost of damage caused by riots and urban violence. Here is what they had to say:

To the editor,

“I am beyond disgusted by the idea that innocent people should be forced to pay increased insurance premiums for the damage caused by rioters. This isn't just wrong, it's unfair and unjust, and makes a mockery of those who have done nothing to deserve this,” F.B

“I have to say my heart sank slightly when I read about this rioters pay bill. Another insurance tax to pay. Some might say that it's only 0.8%, but, like most things, will it go up every year? I also don't think it's fair for those who did not take part in the riots to be paying for something they haven't done. For me, I think it should all be down to the rioters,” B.D

“Why not make the parents pay for the damage? Go as far as selling their house and car – that should wake them up and make them control their children!” M.H

“I think that if this goes ahead, those of us who live in a peaceful rural environment should not have to dig deeper. It's outrageous.” D.Z

“I have reservations regarding the fairness of this levy, as those bearing the increased insurance costs may also be among those affected by the associated civil unrest.

I support the implementation of significant financial penalties for individuals apprehended for property damage or looting during demonstrations. I propose that organisers be held accountable for the outcomes of these events, potentially requiring them to secure appropriate insurance coverage before a march or protest is authorised.

While I firmly uphold the fundamental right to peaceful assembly, regardless of viewpoint, I must condemn the patterns of rioting and looting that have increasingly accompanied these public demonstrations.” T.S

“PROPOSAL OUTRAGEOUS... ‘Theft’ from upright citizens to compensate for urban criminals.” V.C
