Avoiding tollroads a false economy
Gordon McKAY, Montcuq
I WRITE with reference to the letter from David Rowland in the last edition. I too do not like the high price of fuel and motorway tolls but when I drive back to the UK from my home in Montcuq, the drive to Calais takes about nine hours, but if I go on the non motorway roads it would take about 15 hours. Also, on the motorway I set the cruise control and with a 2.5 litre heavy car the fuel consumption approaches 45 miles per gallon, so it is no contest.
I never, ever, buy fuel at the motorway garages but always top up at a supermarket. I have used the official government website that you listed a few years ago and so always buy diesel at the best price.
