Flying car would soar above traffic
Airbus is planning a flying car that could end traffic jams by soaring above them.
Working with ItalDesign, the plane manufacturer could have a working two-person prototype built by 2027 that will combine the functions of a car, a plane and a train.
Called Pop.Up and revealed at the Geneva Motor Show, it is a two-passenger pod that can be attached on top of a set of wheels, attached to the bottom of an eight-propellor drone-type aircraft and linked to others to form a high speed train that can travel in the planned Hyperloop tube.
The Pop.Up will be autonomous and Ford boss Bill Ford has previously said self-driving was a must for any flying car, adding: “Most people can’t drive in two dimensions, let alone three.”
Battery-powered, both Pop.Up base and air units would return automatically to a charging station after use.
Airbus sees Pop.Up being used for commercial transport but business users would see it as a way to speed their journeys to work or the airport.
However, the company must find a way to combat the problems of noise and downdraft.
