French supermarkets recall cheese containing undeclared allergens
The Bethmale cheese was labelled incorrectly, and may not be suitable for people with an allergy to eggs
The Bethmale cheese was labelled incorrectly, and may not be suitable for people with an allergy to eggs
French supermarkets including Franprix, Leclerc, Système U and Délice de l’Ouest have begun recalling Bethmale cheese packs sold in their stores across France because of the presence of undeclared allergens and the way in which the milk was treated.
The Bethmale cost €2.50, was labelled ‘Fourme d’Ambert 190g’ and was sold between August 4 and August 11 under the Fromageries d’Occitanie brand.
Its batch number is 22214102, its health mark was FR 31.582.001 CE and its GTIN code is 3492844651000.
The cheese had a use-by date of around September 21.
The recall was initiated because of a labelling issue on the cheese, which contains egg lysozyme but which did not have this allergen on its ingredients list.
In addition, the milk used to produce the cheese is pasteurised and not thermised – heated for at least 15 seconds at a temperature of 57-68C.
People who have an allergy to eggs should therefore avoid consuming the product.
Customers having bought this cheese and who may be affected by the labelling errors can take it back to the shop for a refund.
However, those who do not have an egg allergy and who do not have an issue with pasteurised milk can eat the cheese if they wish.
This recall procedure will last until August 26. You can read more about it on the government alert website Rappel Conso.
Customers can call 04 78 64 38 17 for further information.
