Much of France faces a wet weekend, with clouds spreading across the country on Saturday and lingering over the north on Sunday.

Temperatures will stay stable but will be below 20C for the entire weekend in some places.

Friday September 12

The day will begin on a chilly note, with temperatures in some rural and central areas staying below 10°C for much of the morning, accompanied by grey skies across the north.

Cloud coverage is likely in all areas except the south-east with showers expected in Brittany and Normandy.

Rain will intensify through the day in Normandy and Hauts-de-France, though it is unlikely to move far inland and should reach no further than Paris.

Some thunderstorms may accompany the showers but should not be heavy.

Highs of around 18C to 19C in the north and 23C to 25C in the south are expected although this may rise to 27C along the Mediterranean coast.

Saturday September 13

Unstable conditions are set to cover most of France on Saturday.

With the exception of Brittany and a small part of the south-west, the rest of the country is at risk of storms or showers throughout the day.

Rain is most likely in the north and north-east, central-west, and the south around the Massif Central.

Storms are most likely around the Mediterranean and in Paris, while even areas where the rain eases may remain under grey skies throughout the day.

Temperatures will remain at around 18C in the north, rising to around 23C in the south.

Currently, no heightened warnings for any weather conditions are in place, but this may change as conditions progress.

Sunday September 14

Sunday will bring more varied conditions: south of the Loire, early clouds will clear to give way to dry, summery weather with plenty of sunshine.

Highs of 27C along the Mediterranean and 23C - 25C elsewhere means this is the day for any outdoor activities.

In the north however, rains will continue, particularly along the English Channel and in Brittany.

Clouds will remain in place for much of the day in the north.

Winds of potentially 80 - 100 km/h will also hit northern coastal areas, although stormy conditions are unlikely.

Early forecasts for next week suggest a classic north-south contrast, with warm if slightly cloudy conditions in the south and plenty of rain in the north.
