Google fined for giving free maps

A French map company has been awarded damages against the web giant for ‘unfair competition’

GOOGLE has been found guilty of “abusing its dominant position” by a Paris court.

The firm was sued by a map company Bottin Cartographes, which has lost business due to the web giant’s activities.

It sells companies “how to find us” maps and a service for calculating routes –which Google provides free.

Bottin said that Google’s activities represented “unfair competition”.

It was awarded half a million euros of damages from Google by the Paris Commercial Court, which also fined the company €15,000.

Google said it would appeal.
