Heating boilers must be checked

DID you know that there is a legal obligation to have your heating boiler maintained once a year?

DID you know that there is a legal obligation to have your heating boiler maintained once a year?

Though the law provides for no particular sanctions in the case of not doing so, a certificate showing the maintenance may be required by the company that insures your home.

To find a technician, look in the yellow pages under chauffagiste (heating technician), or do a web search in your area with the term, or entretien chaudière (boiler maintenance) - you could also ask advice from your home’s previous occupants. He or she will check the boiler works safely and efficiently, does not emit too many pollutants and, if necessary, adjusts it and/or cleans it.

The check may save you money by making sure the boiler is not consuming too much energy.

Boilers concerned by the once-ayear rule are those from 4-400kW (larger ones should be maintained every two years).

Unless stated otherwise in a rental contract, the occupant is responsible. Landlords may ask to see certificates, and if none is available may retain the cost of a check from the deposit (a tenant may ask to see one on arrival).

Firms of heating technicians often offer ongoing maintenance contracts, costing from around €100 a year, and including the annual check.
