Majority oppose 10kph speed cut
Survey finds 75% of people are against reducing speed limit on certain roads from 90kph to 80kph
NEARLY three-quarters of people in France are against reducing the speed limit on departmental roads from 90kph to 80kph, a survey has found.
A total 74% of those polled said they opposed the planned speed cut, which is about to start a two-year trial period along certain stretches. Opposition is strongest among those living in rural areas, where the lower limit received only 16% support.
There was stronger support for impending restrictions on mobile phone use in cars, with 62% of those polled said in the online survey for household maintenance firm Doméo. A ban on some hands-free kits will come into force in France on June 30.
The study also found that one in two motorists regularly flout the speed limit, while 90% of those polled admitted to speeding sometimes.
Seven in 10, however, said they believed the new restrictions would see fewer cars on urban or city roads, but the majority of those polled also said that they did not support planned bans on older diesel cars in city centres.
