Petition for Carla to repay web bill
Nearly 45,000 sign call for former First Lady to give a donation to cover €410,000 cost of her site
A PETITION to get former First Lady Carla Bruni to refund the €410,000 that the Elysée paid for her private website has drawn nearly 45,000 signatures.
It comes after the Cours des Comptes state auditor revealed that the cost of setting up the Carla Bruni Foundation website was paid by the taxpayer in 2011 and 2012 as part of Elysée expenses under the presidency of her husband, Nicolas Sarkozy.
A Paris web developer launched the petition saying it was wrong to use public funds to create a personal website.
He attacked the €410,000 cost, and said it was far too high for a website that should have cost less than €10,000.
His petition on the change.org website calls on Ms Bruni to make an equivalent donation to charitable groups, as helping “vulnerable groups” is one of the stated aims of the site, www.carlabrunisarkozy.org.
The petition can be seen on at www.change.org
