Power workers play Robin Hood
Unions replace random power cuts with help for poor households, switching off meters and speed cameras
POWER and gas workers are taking industrial action today and Thursday after negotiations between EDF, GDF and unions broke down again.
It is the third week of action by unions over demands for a €1,500 bonus, a 5% pay rise and a halt to outsourcing of jobs.
However, unions are looking at more populist measures: instead of widespread cuts there will be targeted action.
Their “Robin Hood” plans could involve easing customers’ bills by knocking out power meters during off-peak periods; reconnecting homes cut off for not paying bills, and cutting power to radar speed traps and motorway tollbooths.
Last week 70,000 customers were affected and there has been criticism of power cuts especially after a hospital in Douai, Nord, was cut off for two hours last Wednesday.
