Summer works bring disruption to Paris public transport, including Charles-de-Gaulle airport
Airport authorities warn of 90-minute journey times from city centre as several major lines see station closures
Visitors to Paris this summer are being warned to check travel plans in advance as major works take place across the city’s public transport network.
Passengers heading to Charles-de-Gaulle airport in particular are being warned to check journeys in advance due to disruption.
Regional transport operators conduct ‘grands travaux’ (major works) each summer in the city, modernising and upgrading railways on the busiest lines.
Summer is seen as the best time to carry out the work, as despite being a popular time for tourists, many people who work in the city are on holiday.
Works generally last until August 16, although in some cases run to the end of the month – and for one major line, evening disruption is expected until the end of the year.
Several lines impacted including to airport
This summer work will be carried out on several Métro lines (8 and 13, with works to lines 4 and 12 completed in July). Works include upgrades to République (line 8) and Porte de Vanves (line 13).
In addition, lines 4 and 5 are expected to be extremely busy in parts due to works on the RER commuter rail system as they temporarily become the only link between major stations.
Tramways T1 and T2 and the C1 cable car will also see limited services, as will commuter lines H, K, and P.
However, the largest works are being carried out on the RER commuter rail network.
Lines A, C, and E will all see disruption of some kind, either through certain stations (including the major ‘Nation’ station on line A) being closed or trains not running/a reduction in services on certain portions of the line.
On RER Line D, service will be completely cut between Gare du Nord and Gare de Lyon as tracks are upgraded, lasting until August 16.
On the RER B, services heading north from Gare du Nord to Mitry-Claye or Charles-de-Gaulle airport will run once every seven minutes.
As these trains split in the northern suburbs to serve two separate lines, this means only one train roughly every 15 minutes heading to the airport.
Daytime services will therefore be considerably busier heading to the airport, risking overcrowding.
Airport authorities warn that it could take up to 90 minutes to reach the airport from the city centre, and urge travellers to check plans in advance.
Alternative options include buses, coaches, or private taxis. An express train to the airport is scheduled to launch next year but is not ready in time for this summer.
Trains heading towards the airport will stop at 22:45 until the end of September on most nights, although some weekends will be exempt. Early closures will last until December 2026, with timetables for autumn disruption given closer to the time.
Many RER B services heading south out of Gare du Nord are also impacted.
