Top 10 food products in France most hit by price rises
Food prices have risen in general by 1.26% over the past year, caused by a knock-on effect of rising energy prices
Inflation in France is at its highest point since the 1980s, with a general increase in prices of 4.5% compared to one year ago.
Much of this is down to rising energy prices, which rose by 28.9% in March alone, but food prices have also started to increase with products overall 1.26% pricier now than in March 2021.
This is to a large extent down to the effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with rising energy costs impacting farmers who then have to adjust their prices.
In March, 81% of food products in France were affected by inflation, including in supermarkets, shops and markets.
*It is not clear what specifically is meant by food trays and food pouches (barquettes et sachets alim), but it is likely ready-prepared meals or sachets that can be re-heated in the microwave.
Inflation in France is expected to continue to increase during the year and could reach as much as 5% year-on-year by the third quarter.
Due to this, people in France are expected to reduce how much they purchase by up to 1.4% compared to 2021, market research company Iri reported.
