Top chef quits Michelin success

Celebrated chef Marc Veyrat is giving up his three-star Michelin restaurant for health reasons.

TOP chef Marc Veyrat is leaving his celebrated restaurant l’auberge de l’Eridan in Annecy for health reasons.

The 58-year-old chef has decided to give up his three-star Michelin restaurant to focus on recovering fully from a serious skiing accident in 2006.

He also wants to concentrate on more “eco-friendly” projects after his recovery.

He said: “I am stopping. I have given all my life to my clients, I am going to rest.”

Mr Veyrat was left in a wheelchair after the serious accident three years ago in Megève in which he broke various bones in his body including his his tibia, fibia and shoulder, and bones in his neck.

He still uses crutches to get around and has never fully recovered from various operations.

Mr Veyrat opened his first auberge in Manigod at the age of 28. Eight years later, he sold it and opened the Eridan in the heart of Annecy.

He has since gained much acclaim including from celebrated critic Christian Millau, one of the first to discover him and who nominated him cuisinier de l’année in 1989 and 1990. He was given his first star in 1986.

The chef’s future eco-friendly plans include a restaurant écologique, run as a totally self-sufficient operation.
