Warning over fake Leclerc voucher scam
Fake €250 vouchers for Leclerc supermarkets have been circulating on the internet and social media over the last days.
Leclerc has confirmed that it is a scam and warns customers to be vigilant.
The message to win a voucher started to appear on Facebook last week and has also been seen on Whatsapp.
It invites members of the public to click on a link to win a €250 voucher. It says: “Pour aider nos clients fidèles, nous offrons gratuitement à chacun un coupon de 250 euros” (to help our loyal customers, we are offering a free voucher of €250 to everyone).
It is accompanied with a picture of a Leclerc store. When you click on the link, you have to answer questions and you are then invited to share the ad with your contacts.
The goal for the scammers is to get your personal information to reuse it. It is a phishing attempt. The IP address of the message has been identified as being in the Bahamas and has already been reported for various scamming attempts, according to Business Insider media.
If you did not notice it was a scam, and entered your personal details on the link, be careful in the coming months as your contact information could be used "to commit various forms of fraud or identity theft," says the government website on online frauds Cybermaveillance.gouv.fr. If you had indicated your bank details, it advises contacting your bank.
