Do I have to change name on carte grise to sell car?
My husband died recently. His car is in his name – will I have to change it before selling it? LC

IF YOU inherit a car due to a family member’s death, if the sale takes place within three months of the death you do not have to change the carte grise [registration document] before selling it or giving it to someone else if you are not using it (an exception can be made for taking it for a contrôle technique). In this case you should give the new owner a signed attestation ‘on your honour’ that it has been off the road (n’a pas circulé sur la voie publique). If you are using it, you do need to change it to your name, by application to the prefecture, before selling it.
