Perseids return: up to 100 shooting stars an hour expected in France this August

The display lasts from July 17 to August 24, peaking around August 12 and 13

The Perseid shooting star display runs from mid-July to late August each year

France’s summer shooting star season is once again dazzling skygazers, with the Perseids meteor shower underway since July 17 and expected to last until August 24. Here is how to enjoy its spectacular peak around the nights of August 12-13.

The display runs from mid-July to late August each year and stargazers do not require special equipment to enjoy it.

Among the best areas in France for stargazing are the Pic du Midi (Hautes Pyrénées) or the Morvan mountains in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté - both known for their dark skies and low light pollution.

How to improve your view

To maximise your chances of seeing shooting stars:

  • Avoid light pollution: The further from town or street lights, the better. Even brief exposure to artificial light (like phone screens) can diminish your night vision.

  • Let your eyes adjust: It takes around 15 minutes for your pupils to fully adapt to the dark. Try not to check your phone unless it is in ‘night mode’.

  • No need for a telescope: The Perseids are best seen with the naked eye. Binoculars or telescopes are optional, but may limit your field of vision.

  • Get comfortable: Bring a blanket, reclining chair, warm layers, snacks, and drinks. Check the weather forecast before heading out.

  • Use an app: Apps like SkyView or Stellarium can help you identify where the meteors will appear. Both have night vision settings to protect your dark adaptation.
