Waste management is great in some parts of France

To the Editor,

We read with incredulity the letters regarding household waste in Dordogne and Lot.

Here in Hautes-Alpes we have a superb system using Moloks (large, buried cylindrical containers) and tri selectif (waste sorting).

In our village of 1,700 inhabitants there are numerous sites where we can dispose of glass, plastics, cardboard, compost and non-recyclable waste.

The Moloks are emptied by lorry. Residents can also help themselves to free compost from the manure container.

The village déchetterie, open during normal hours, will take larger objects, building materials, old electrical items etc, at no charge. Again, everything is recycled where possible.

An additional service provided by the mairie is the regular collection of large items that householders cannot transport to the déchetterie.

We are fortunate to live in a beautiful department spared from the blight of fly-tipping. Chapeau to our enlightened authorities!

I.S., Hautes-Alpes
